ADEPT Tool Design
Objectives
Learning Goals
The learning goals identified by the ADVANCE team, and articulated by the ADEPT team, is to recognize the nuances
of an "information rich" curriculum vita (cv). This can be accomplished by achieving
subgoals:
- understanding differences in unit-level, institution-level and culturally-based criteria
- presenting information relevant to these standards
- recognizing how strengths and weaknesses in written and oral presentations affect outcomes, and can drive future career choices.
Learning goals were
identified and classified into two categories: those of candidates and
those of committee members. Some learning goals are common to both groups, but accessible through different task conformance; other goals are unique to each group. Having different
learning subgoals and/or different ways of achieving those goals are each best served by differing activities and/or
differing versions of the same activity. The Simulated Meeting (SM)
targets committee members, but a candidate version is proposed. Cases
& Questions (C&Q) is useful to both committee members and
candidates. Navigating Your Career (NYC) and Annotated Vitae (AV) are
geared towards candidates. The learning goals of the two groups are
outlined as follows:
User Goals
The overall goal for the user is to produce a well-crafted cv via
participation in a real-world discussion about cv preparation. Various
characters in a casual setting present issues that affect inclusion or
presentation of elements in a cv. Subgoals for the user in creating the
cv are:
- to access general information about a cv
- to access case-specific information about preparing a cv
- answering multiple-choice questions posed by situational dialogue
- understanding the critical analysis provided by a "mentor"
- to access relevant bibliography regarding issues represented in the multiple-choice questions
Functional Overview
The ADEPT tool is divided into two primary parts, a web access point and a downloadable application.
The ADEPT website's functions are to provide:
- an introduction to issues of bias and procedure in the P&T process
- access to the application
- access to the body of research done in conjunction with the ADVANCE grant, outside of the context of the ADEPT tool
The website is organized into a section for P&T committee members
and a section for P&T candidates. It includes an annotated
bibliography, links to Georgia Tech resources and external resources,
and a download link where users can download the ADEPT application.
Downloadable Application Design (learner/user goals; content, interaction, graphic and architecture development)
The ADEPT downloadable application, accessible from the website, provides learners with four activities:
A third part, ADEPT Survey, which was originally storyboarded as part of the Simulated Meeting activity, was moved outside of that activity, and may be included in a future version of the ADEPT tool, as either web-based or part of the downloadable application.
