Historic and Neighborhood Preservation Committee

Goals and objectives:

  • Fostering relationships with individuals from all communities around the BeltLine corridor who are interested in historic preservation and revitalization
  • Identification of historic landmarks and districts AND those landmarks and districts which are eligible for historic status
  • To ensure that the preservation of landmarks and districts eligible for historic status as well as their revitalization when possible within these communities is encouraged and supported throughout the BeltLine planning and development process

Atlanta is a city rich in history, culture and listings on the National Register of Historic Places! For instance, did you know that Piedmont Park and Virginia Highlands are both listed on the National Register? You can obtain more information on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also obtain more information about what the National Register can and cannot do for a community. There are economic incentives for being listed on the National Register or the Georgia State Register.

You can also obtain more information on the Georgia State Historic Preservation Division within the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources.

Did you know that there is such a thing as a local historic designation? Indeed, landmarks or districts can be designated as local historic landmarks or districts depending on whether or not certain criteria are met. The Atlanta Urban Design Commission handles this process.

Read about the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s idea in their press release.

If you are interested in participating on this committee, and have time and energy to commit (and any special expertise), please contact committee chair Cary Aiken or BNC History.
